Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) and Vestibular Rehabilitation

Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) refers to a collection of symptoms that can persist for days, weeks, or even months after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Common symptoms may include dizziness, imbalance, headaches, neck pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating. These lingering effects often interfere with daily life, work, and physical activity.

At Physical Therapy and Wellness by Design, we provide vestibular and neuromuscular rehabilitation specifically designed to address the sensory, balance, and movement dysfunctions that frequently occur after concussion. Our treatment focuses on improving balance, gaze stability, neck mobility, and body coordination — using evidence-based strategies tailored to each individual’s recovery phase and symptom presentation.

Physical therapy plays a key role in concussion management by addressing:

  • Vestibular dysfunctions (dizziness, vertigo, motion sensitivity)

  • Cervical spine contributions (neck stiffness, headaches)

  • Visual and balance retraining

  • Gradual return to physical activity and cognitive tasks

However, because concussion symptoms can overlap with more serious conditions such as intracranial bleeding or structural brain injury, we require a referral or medical clearance from a qualified healthcare provider — such as an MD, DO, or DC — before beginning physical therapy for PCS. This ensures that all patients are properly screened and safe for participation in active rehabilitation.

Once cleared, our individualized, one-on-one vestibular therapy sessions help patients restore equilibrium, recover coordination, and rebuild confidence — guiding them safely back to their normal level of function and performance.
